In 1902, when John Pope Marshall decided to move his family from Tellico toMarshall, he brought with him some land that he had bought from Sam Houston at the time of their battle at San Jacinto - land now part of US 281/US 183 (the present day I-10). The piece of property that would become known as Pope Field became part of the village lot where John and James lived until they sold it to Leonard Smith in 1913 for $250 cash! The original name for this tract of land was “Church Hill” but due to confusion with another nearby settlement called “Tellico”, no one adopted it until after John Pope Marshall’s death in 1916 when his widow Anna filed a claim against her husband’s estate claiming they had given her the incorrect address! It wasn't until 1923 that everyone finally got their names together and changed the name back to Marshal because burial rights were still held by Church Hill!

Marshall was founded in 1836 by John Marshall and his brother, James. The town was named for General James Austin, who had served as the United States’ first military governor of Texas. The brothers developed a cotton plantation there and ranched out land until they built a large brick courthouse in 1840. In 1845, they married Sarah Ballinger and began to import goods from Missouri and other states to support their growing business. He also became an early advocate for statehood for Texas. The town grew quickly and by 1860 it had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1865, the county seat was moved from Marshall to Texarkana because of the increased population there.Marshall experienced major growth after World War II when oil production increased in the area. The town became known as the "Oil Capital of the world." Many businesses were founded here including Phillips Petroleum Company (now ExxonMobil), Marshalls Manufacturing Company (later Maxwell-Hogg), Texarkana Utilities Corporation (now TXU) and Marshall University (now Baylor University).In recent years, much development has taken place in central Marshall with new shopping malls, restaurants and housing developments popping up all around downtown while plans are underway to build a new high school and arenared park just south of town on State Highway 62
