Marshall, Texas is a city located in the Panhandle of Texas. The population was 26,848 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and lies on both sides of the Trinity River. Marshall was founded by George H. Marshall in 1881 as a cattle ranch and small town that grew to become one of the most important cultural and economic centers in geographically diverse Webb County. The City of Marshall is home to an oil refinery, a large chemical plant, two universities ( Baylor University and Southern Methodist University), four airports (Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Tyler Municipal Airport, Amarillo Municipal Airport, Corpus Christi International Airport) as well as over 60 businesses including KFC, Ford Motor Company, Jussie's BBQ & Pizza Kitchen, Miller Brewing Company and Coca Cola Bottling Plant. The first settlers in what would becomeMarshall were farmers who arrived from Kentucky in 1836. By 1840 they had erected a log cabin on what is now West Main Street. A post office was established at that location on July 20th, 1840 under the name "Hogback". The first store in Marshall was built by Wm Crain and Brother John Gentry on East Third Street between High School Avenue and State Highway 24 about 1865-1867. In 1881 Gentry opened a general store on North First Street which became known as "the old seat" for many years until it closed around 1974 when it moved to its present location across from Central Park Elementary School. In 1886 Wm Crain built his second store opposite First Creek Road which became known as "the new seat." This store continued operation until 1951 when it closed due to health concerns brought about by mercury poisoning from an oil refiner located adjacent to the original site where it stood until 1978 when it moved into its presentlocation across from Central Park Elementary School In 1907 Wm Fenton opened his last grocery store at 128 E Main St which remains open today operating as "Fenton's Grocery". At this time Marshall had just 1 elementary school with 7 students grades Kindergarten through 8th grade named Prairie View A&M Academy which operated out of rented classrooms near State Highway 24 while also serving as a middle school during lunchtime for local children attending other schools across Webb County while their parents attended work outside the town limits In 1912 Dr Clyde Cook started construction on what would become Central Park Elementary School with land he had purchased east of Historic Marshalls Store building along Highways 24 & 36 north of Federal Boulevard On November 15th 1915 Mrs Lillie Sweet donated her lot adjoining her house on Elmwood Drive for use as Central Park . On February 5th 1916 Marshall’s Town Hall burned down leaving only 3 brick archways remaining standing within Municipality boundaries today forming part of Heritage Walk corridor running north/south through downtown Marshalls heart Mrs Sweet donated another pieceof property adjoining Elmwood Drive extending northerly beyond Heritage Walk boundary line becoming Sheldon Heights southeast corner lot addition all donated together making total area available for educational purposes . Marshall was founded in 1836, by James Marshall and his wife Esther. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had been its first postmaster. The town grew rapidly after it was established, and in 1851 it moved to its present location on the prairies of central Texas. By 1870, the town had a population of 1,500 people. In 1907, Marshall trade fair attracted over 100,000 visitors to its events. Marshal continued to grow until the early 1920s when oil production began to increase and the demand for goods increased; however, Marshal slowly lost its importance as a commercial center due to this change in economic development.
