However, during World War II there remained two rifle ranges open-one located east of town near Abilene and another west of town near Waco.

The Marshall community was founded in 1876 by John Marshall and his family. John's father had been a member of the original group that founded San Antonio de Bexar County in 1826. By 1876, Marshall had married local girl Kate Green and their children were born there: Anna (1877-1976), Johnnie (1879-1948), Nannie (1881-1968), and daughter Jeanne (born 1886). In 1889, General Order No. 1 was published ordering all citizens to provide arms for the defense of themselves and their homes against Indians. This led to increased development in Marshall as several families took up arms to protect their land from now unknown Indian threats. In 1902, a post office named after Marshal opened within one mile of the current site of Marshalltown; this new post office served until it was discontinued on December 31st, 1905 due to lack of mail volume! In 1907 an oil well was drilled in what is now known as Marshalls Creek while cattle were being milked on nearby ranches; this well brought about great wealth for many people including members of theMarshall family who became quite wealthy through oil production! The townspeople quickly built a four storey red schoolhouse which still stands today serving as a museum/community center/library! They also erected two other buildings: a barn and a garage which are still extant today! A large cotton gin was constructed shortly thereafter followed by several small businesses such as groceries, clothing stores etc.; however these businesses failed due to difficult economic times during World War I when prices for commodities plummeted!! The war ended with political changes leading to an increase in job opportunities for Americans; however these opportunities did not last because prices for goods continued soaring!! Consequently most residents returned back into their homes only to suffer through another hard recession following World War II which again rain disrupted commerce!! However some brave souls decided to open small businesses once more like gas stations etc.; but once again they failed during the 1970sdde 1980s when energy costs rose dramatically!!! Finally during the 1990s things began slowly improving with manufacturers starting to invest here again resulting in some modest success !! But alas recent economic conditions have caused even more unemployment and decline among business activity
