Marshall, Texas is a small town in Bastrop County, Texas. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first settlers in Marshall were William Marshall and his family who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky. They founded a cabin on the banks of the Sabine River. In 1840, they erected a log cabin on what is now State Highway 183 near today's post office. The Marshalls continued to live there until 1850 when they moved to what is now Bastrop County and built a large frame house on current day Middlebrook Drive. From this home, they managed much of the land that comprises present day Marshall County and parts of Travis County. In 1851, Wm. Hargrave sold them some additional land east of present day Round Rock for $800 dollars more than their original purchase price which formed Bastrop County boundary with Austin Township (now part of Austin). This event helped spur early settlement in what would become Marshall County by providing easier access to lands for colonization and development as well as helping newcomers make close friends and coexist with local citizens for many years! Marshall was originally called "Hargrave's Prairie" because General William Hargrave had purchased it from Mrs. Peggy Hargrave back in 1845 after she married John Slaughter (the husband of Mrs Alice Slaughter) at an Indian sale outside Houston TX!
