The community is named after General George Marshall who served as United States Secretary of War from 1943 to 1945 and later became an American Ambassador to Britain. The town began as a cattle ranching community in 1881 on what is now FM 527 east of Dalhart. By 1920, it had a post office, two churches and six stores. In 1928, the post office changed its name to Marshall and soon grew into an agricultural center with over 20 businesses processing milk, wheat, oats, hay and other crops. Agriculture has since been replaced by manufacturing although some small businesses still remain there today such as K-Mart which opened in 1959 and continues to be one of the largest employers in MarshalltownToday

Marshall, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 5,826 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-most populous city in Texas and its second-largest city after Dallas. It is also the most populous city in East Texas and a major center for medical tourism and education. The name "Marshall" comes from General James Mclntyre Marshall who fought in both World War I and II. The first settlement in Marshall was made on what is now known as Cotton Row by members of the Denton family around 1836. They named their development Cottonwood because of the natural cottonWOOD that grew thereabouts. A post office called Cottonwood was established in 1839, and remained open until 1907. In 1861, during Confederate States of America (CSA) military operations against Union forces within WestTexas Territory, Marshal was burned by Union troops under order of General Robert E Lee as part of an unsuccessful attempt to suppress Confederate activity within Texan territory during this time period In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts led by President Abraham Lincoln, Marshalls legal status within Texan jurisdiction changed from slaveholding to free labor due to newly enacted dry counties laws passed during this time frame From 1872 until 1959 Marshall had a seat on the Houston–Ft Worth Railroad Corporation board In 1902 Marshall began purchasing land east of town from oilmen who had leased it from Texans prior to statehood including future mayors Joe Campos (1911-1920), Clyde Waddell (1921-1945), and Sylvester Turner (1946-1959). All four men were mayor when they served as such; annexation occurred thereafter By 1960 Marshall's population totaled 3,585 while its land area totaled just over 7 square miles
Marshall was founded in 1836 by Captain David Marshall and his brother, Major John Marshall. The town was named for General George B. Marshall who had served in the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Llano River, and it became a major center of cattle ranching and cotton harvesting. The town also became known for its temperance movement, which helped to oppose alcohol prohibitionism in Texas. In 1938, the town was renamed for Dr. James Fenton Burns following his donation of land to the community.
