The town was named for General Samuel Marshall who led American forces during the Mexican–American War. The townsite was first settled by Texans who migrated from Louisiana in 1836. After Texas won independence from Mexico, they established a governance structure that includes a mayor and five council members. However, voting power rests with the farmer classes due to lack of representation on local government entities. A post office was built in Marshall in 1853 and operated until it closed in 1913. The first settler to reside in Marshall was John Sperry and his family who arrived November 10th, 1856. A schoolhouse (later Methodist Episcopal) was erected on what is now Main Street between 1830 and 1834 by subscription from settlers near present day Rice Lake Elementary School and Baptist United Brethren Church which stands today across from Rice Lake High School on US 59 south of IH10W/IH35W junction

The Marshalltown Railroad crossed through Marshall in 1875 and connected with other railroads near Austin to bring goods north to Dallas and east to Wichita Falls. The population increased rapidly during the late 1800s as farmers brought their herds of cattle and horses to feed in the marshy soils near Marshall. In 1915, when oil was discovered in nearby Anadarko County, Texas, business began booming forMarshall'soil company which now employs over 100 people at two production sites. Today, Marshall is known for its historic buildings (such as the old courthouse), central location on Texas' East Central Railway line (the only one remaining in Texas), its rich history, and its wide variety of cultural attractions including arts festivals, rodeos, golf tournaments, SPCA adoptions/rescues/programs/festivals/sports events etc., all within easy driving distance from their downtown core.
