Marshall, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by J.B. Marshall in 1881 as a railroad stop on the San Antonio and West Point Railroad. The first firearms manufactured in Marshall were cannons used by Company C of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment during the Mexican–American War. One such cannon still remains at Marshall University (now UT Austin) and can be seen on display in the museum which closed in May 2009 after thirty years of operation. In 1865, General Sam Houston purchased 640 acres (240 ha) adjoining present day Marshall from J B Marshall for $5,000 cash and an annual gift of $200 to support farming thereabouts until sold to him again in 1868 for another $10,000 cash plus an annual gift of $400 to support farming thereabouts until sold to him again in 1870 for another $12,500 cash plus an additional 100 acres (40 ha) for stock raising purposes until finally donated to the state of Texas by Mr W H Adler with an option to sell it back when he became governor in 1876 for a total price of $48,750 All land transactions between Sam Houston and J B Marshall were recorded and paid for with gold pieces that adorn this building today: "Sam Houston Gold Medal Building" now known as "Marshall Hall". This building served as both a courthouse (1876-1879), law library & meeting room (1880-1904), State Capitol Annex & Offices from 1907-1909 before becoming known as "Marshall Hall" once again serving as a court house from 1909-1960 while also functioning as UT Austin's Main Campus Library from 1960-2009

The town was named after General James Hogg who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of New Mexico. Marshal also played an important role during the American Civil War by helping arm Confederate forces and providing supplies to them from his home state of Texas. After the war ended, Marshall became a key center for cotton trade and commerce throughout Vernon County until it closed its doors entirely due to World War II shortages of munitions. In the late 1950s & early 1960s Marshall regained some importance as a center for education with the opening of two high schools (Marshall High School & First Baptist Church). However; today little remains of its original character other than some scattered buildings that still stand on Main Street
