In 1870 local ranchers formed the Farmers’ Association which purchased land east of town for grazing and farming purposes including present day Marshall Field International Airport which opened in 1934). In 1888 Marshal became home to one of America’s first commercial radio stations when KGMB (AM) signed on air from a shack atop Trinity University hill (now part of UTSA). At that time most radios used either sound or pictures only so it was an exciting event for locals and visitors alike when KDKA (FM) joined KGMB 10 years later! In 1923 Captain John Denton founded “The Denton Times” newspaper which continues publication today as The Marshall Enterprise News Journal; it has been published continuously since 1911! In 1948Marshall residents organized themselves into what would become known as the “First Presbyterian Church”; this church remains active today with over 3 acres dedicated specifically to worship! Today Marshalls economy revolves largely around agriculture, ranching, tourism and education - making it one of the most vibrant communities within limits anywhere!
