Marshall, Texas is a small town located in the panhandle of Texas. It is bordered by Odessa to the east, Midland to the north, and Lubbock to the west. The population of Marshall was 1,811 as of 2010. The first people in Marshall were Native Americans who lived on the Wichita River. They hunted and gathered food from around their area. In 1836, General Sam Houston ordered Major John Crain to build a road through Marshall so goods could be shipped up the river easily. This road became known as Houston Street after General Houston's army passed through it on their way to battle against Mexican forces at San Jacinto. In 1845, Marshall was named for General Andrew Jackson's father-in-law Colonel James Kenedy (1793-1875). Kenedy had been an aide-de-camp to Jackson during his campaign for president in 1848. He later served as secretary of war under Polk and Buchanan before being elected as a Democrat to the U.S House of Representatives in 1860. When Kansas seceded from Mexico and form its own country, Kenedy donated land inMarshall County so that settlers could settle there without fear of Mexican retribution should they leave those areas unprotected by Mexican troops.[1] In 1870, Marshal was annexed by Lubbock County according to state law which allowed forarger towns within smaller counties when two populations formed when two or more municipalities join together with no intent of secession from either county[2]. At this time Marshall had a population of just over one thousand residents[3]. By 1910, however, Marshalls population had increased by twenty percent due largely to recent immigration from Mexico[4]. Mexicans continued to arrive into Marshall until World War II when all illegal immigrants were deported pursuant theretoby federal law[5]. This area would become known as "the Harrimans'.” The village started settlement on this new land with only twelve houses and two stores built before it reached its current size of over one thousand residents by 1907. During World War II when much of East Texas was destroyed by bombing raids by the Japanese military, many citizens took up arms to help resist Japan's aggression; some even served in combat units such as Company D 246th Infantry Regiment (5th Bombardment Wing), 8th Cavalry Division (7th Cavalry Brigade) and 116th Infantry Regiment (6th Armored Division). A total of seventy five individuals answered an advertisement placed in a local newspaper for citizens toVolunteer with the Signal Corps during World War II because "No other branch offers so much opportunity for patriotism." Many who volunteered did not receive their proper training or assignment because they were county residents who could not serve outside their home county while still living within their residence boundaries. Despite this problem many individual citizens remain proud descendants of those who served during World War II through organizations like Texas Army National Guard Museum andTexas American Legion Post #191 located at nearby Mission Airport
