He built a small cabin on an outcropping of rock overlooking the Brazos River and named his settlement "Marshallville." After serving as captain of Company G (1st Texas Cavalry) at the Battle of Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War, General James J. Marshalls arrived in Texas in March 1879 to take command of an expedition against Santa Anna's forces at San Antonio de Bexar County Missionaries' Land Station south of present day Houston Heights. At this battle, which occurred on April 6th1879, General Marshalls lost one man killed and three men wounded; he also captured 167 Mexican soldiers including their commander Don Crisanto Lopez y Vargas alias Pancho Villa In 1901, Marshal celebrated its 100th anniversary with a celebration that included a picnic and parade along Uptown Avenue near present day Rice University. On December 15th 1902, Marshal became an Iowan municipality through incorporation proceedings following enactment bythen Mayor Harry Wohlman Sr.. On October 1st 2004 voters approved amending municipal charter to authorize annexation by Houston Heights proper pursuant to Article XII Section 8 thereof which led to the establishment ofHouston Heights Police Department within Marshalls boundaries effective November 17th2004
