Marshall, Texas is a small town in east-central Texas. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Barton County and the largest city in Barton County. Marshall was established in 1881 as an Unincorporated community and ZIP code 77560. The town's name comes from General William Worth Marshall who fought with distinction during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly after construction began on the Marshall Dam which formed Lake Travis in 1959. The dam has since been demolished and much of what was built around it remains today as part of National Recreation Area region 9 - including State Highway 6 that runs through town center and leads to Interstate 35E exit 259 (Exit 287). The industry once located near Marshall included agriculture, manufacturing, warehousing, road building, and other services that have all long gone away or are no longer active. Today, most residents are engaged in some form of commerce or service related activity either within or outside of the city limits of Marshall. The downtown area contains several restaurants/cafes/bars/nightlife options as well as a library and post office. In 1907, Marshall annexed Humble City to its western boundary. In 1923, Marshal became one of thirty-six townships in Texas that were combined into the new Harris County government under then County Commissioner Will Humble. In 1959, it consolidated with nearby Pecos to form what is now downtown Houston. On November 6th, 2006, Mayor Annise Parker announced that Marshall would be among the municipalities within Houston's new city limits
Marshall was founded on May 21, 1836 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Elizabeth Keckley Polk. The town was named for Colonel John Marshall of Virginia. The first store in the community was built on Second Street. By 1840, Marshall had a population of 350 people and a post office. On July 1, 1846, the town incorporated as a city with a population of 2,600 people. In 1865, the City Council passed an ordinance establishing the city's first library which remains in use to this day. From 1860 until 1898, Marshall was served by one Mayor and five Aldermen who were elected at-large from among all registered voters in the city limits. On January 6, 1898 City Clerk Fenton Waddington appointed First Selectman Sam Hixon as Mayor effective February 1st due to term limitation resulting from reelection that year As mayor Sam Hixon continued to serve until his death on December 16th 1952
