A year later, Urrea returned with more maps locating other future settlements around La Union including Carthage (now Marble Falls), Slaughter Beach (now Palestine Beach), Brazoria Bayou (now Cypress Creek), and Pharr Island which he called California Bayoneta after Carlos María de Valencia y Penalosa, Governor of Mexico City during this time period via a letter from governor Francisco Páez Ibarra dated 15 November 1785/6;[1] all these early settlements are likely located within present day Marshall.[2][3][4] In 1837, Mexican cattle trader Zoilo Fernández Vásquez founded Villa Rica about eight miles east-northeast of what is now Marshall on Lavaca Creek;[5] this settlement would become known as Rancho Rincon at some point afterwards according to oral historyOld Settlers website founder Bill Burnett’s father – Frank Burnett – who learned about it when he was working at the energy company XTOE Incorporated circa 1969.[6] Rancho Rincon may have been organized prior to its current incarnation because there are several references indicating that Mariano Rivera used rancho Rincon facilities - both before and after his professional baseball career began - while playing for two different teams: one Team Mexico [7], based out of Brownsville,[8][9] in 1963;[10] also known variously as Rivera Park Inn,[11],[12]; Rivera Stadium,[13],[14]; Rivera Field House [15]; finally Rivera Park sometime between 1951 & 1957 if calculation by author using oldest evidence[/16].
