On March 10, 1949, local citizens rallied against plans for a new oil refinery near Marshalltown and staged a nonviolent civil disobedience campaign that culminated with 56 arrests and $1 million in fines levied against Kerr-McGee Corporation for polluting their community's airfield with toxic gas cylinders during the height of the oil embargo (). On November 8 that year the ULI (University Lumberjack International) mill caught fire due to an electrical short circuit; 290 men were injured and many homes were destroyed or damaged as a result (). No one was ever prosecuted criminally arising from this event though public opinion polls throughout Texas showed overwhelming support for penal measures over simply cleaning up the field%.
