Marshall was named after General James Kenedy (1807-1892), who led Texas during the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas. In 1907, Kenedy donated land to become Marshall County, including what is now the town of Marshall. The county's first courthouse was built here in 1909. The cotton gin that would become Marshalls most famous landmark was built by J.C. Whitney and his son George Washington Whitney in 1915 at a cost of $500,000 dollars ($ million today). At first it processed about one ton per day; however, over time it became known for its high quality cotton fabric because of its low price point compared to other cotton gins on the market. Whitney died in 1928 before he could see his invention used commercially successfully; however, descendants continue to operate Marshalls gin today as part of their business interests. In addition to its economic significance, Marshalls rural setting has made it a popular tourist destination for visitors interested in history or nature buff alike; recent additions include a visitor center and gift shop as well as three miles of beach frontage along the Gulf Coast Estuary between Jacksonville Beach and Fort Myers Beach
Marshall was founded by frontiersmen in 1836. The town was named for General Andrew Marshall, a hero of the Mexican-American War. The city was established on the banks of the Red River, about two miles from where the river empties into Texas. The first store in Marshall opened in 1839. By 1850, there were five stores and eighty-six residents. In 1861, Union soldiers burned down the town's courthouse while it was being used as a barracks.
