Marshall, Texas is a town in Potter County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Ft Worth metropolitan area. The Marshall post office was established in 1881 and discontinued in 1984. The first store in Marshall was built by A.P. Taylor in 1892 and it operated until around 1934 when it closed due to a lack of customers. The first school opened in 1886 and closed in 1966 because of budget cuts by the then-government. In 1907, an oil well was drilled near Marshall and production began soon afterwards which led to the town becoming known as "The Hub". In 1911, a railroad line was completed through Potter County making Marshall an important center for transportation within the county; this also helped spur economic development over time. By 1920, there were over 50 businesses operating within the town limits with another hundred or so under construction at that time. In 1930, blacks were prohibited from voting by state law but decided to fight for their rights via grassroots protests which eventually resulted in their gainful employment status within Marshall during that decade (a rarity for rural Potter County). 1

By 1930, Marshall had reached its peak population of around 80,000 people. However, during the Great Depression decade (1930-1939), Marshal saw a decrease in population as many residents moved away for jobs or other opportunities in nearbyHouston or Dallas.Marshall declined to annex Houston into its city limits during later years until it became an annexed municipality within the City of Houston proper in 1976.
