The community was founded by settlers in 1881 and named for General James Marshall, who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first post office was established in Marshall in 1882. A railroad station was built there in 1903 and remained open until 1999 when it closed due to budget cuts by then-Governor Rick Perry. Marshall has two churches - First Baptist (founded 1907) and Christ Episcopal (founded 1957). There are also a number of schools including North Garland Middle School (1957), Marshall High School (1968), South Garland Intermediate School (1975), East Garland Senior High School (1985), and West Garland Junior High School (2006). The community has several businesses - Armour Mechanical Fabricators Inc., J.C.'s Grocery, Hardware Plus Emporium & Supermarkets, Gold's Gymnasium/Recreational Facility, Corner Fuel & Petrochemical Supplies; Denny's Restaurants - Denny's Sports Grill & Bar restaurants located onMain Street; Piggly Wiggly convenience store; ExxonMobil Refinery; KFC restaurant; Marshalls Department Store which closed down in 2006 but reopened as an online store under the name "www.marshallsdepartmentstore.com".

Marshall was founded in 1876 by John Marshall and his wife, Lillie. The town became a cattle and cotton center during the early years of its existence. In 1907, the Texas Railroad Commission designated Marshall as a main line station on the Dallas-Fort Worth Railway. The town continued to grow as a result of this designation and by 1912 it had a population of over 6,000 people. During World War II, Marshall was home to many military members who were stationed in nearby Fort Bliss. The town also played an important role in the war effort as it supplied food and goods to local farmers. After the war, Marshall experienced some growth due to new development that began to take place in the area. This new development included the construction of several large factories which led to increased employment in the community. Today,Marshall is still an important community with a rich history that has been affected by both good and bad times. It is one of those towns where you can feel both its history and current day struggles right at your fingertips.
Marshall was founded in 1836 by George Marshall, a Scottish-born lawyer and political leader who played a role in the Texas Revolution. The town was named for Marshall, then the United States Secretary of War. It grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as cattle ranching became a major industry in the area. In 1858, Marshall became the first city in Texas when it was incorporated as a town. The city experienced rapid growth after its incorporation and soon emerged as one of the most important towns in Texas. By 1860, it had become an important center for trade and commerce in central Texas. During the American Civil War, Marshall served as Commander-in-Chief of Union military forces in Texas. After the war, he returned to his law practice and helped to promote Reconstruction efforts in Texas. He died at age 93 years on January 17, 1951.
