Mansfield, Texas is a small town that has been around since the 1800s. The town was founded by James Mansfield and his wife, Eliza. The Mansfields were early settlers in what is now Mansfield County. They started a mill here and soon began trading goods with other towns in the area. In 1827, they built a log cabin on the edge of town to house their business. It was later renamed after them, James H. Mansfield Elementary School today stands as testimony to their pioneer spirit. The early days of this small community were filled with hard work and determination. Many residents fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-48). This conflict left many Mexicans dead or wounded, including one man named José Antonio Arguello who was shot and killed while working for his father’s cattle ranch near Mansfield. In 1927, when John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England, he came to live with his parents at 116th Street and Maple Avenue in Mansfield. He attended James H. Mansfield Elementary School which stood until 1957 when it closed due to budget cuts by then Mayor A C Wharton Jr.. After Mr Wharton’s death in 1958, the school reopened as part of Dallas Independent School District #566 (now part of Duncanville ISD). When Duncanville ISD merged into Arlington ISD in 2003, James H. Mansfield Elementary School became part of Arlington High School which still uses it's original name today! Today there are only a few remaining buildings from back when this small community had so much going for it! One such building is the old post office where mail was delivered until 1954 when USPS discontinued its service here because of funding shortfalls within Dallas County!
