Mansfield is a small town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Mansfield was founded in 1876 by J.D. Mansfield and his wife Lula Mansfield as a cattle ranch named "Prairie View". When the railroad arrived in 1888, the Mansfields sold their ranch to become what is now town center. In 1898, they bought land east of town and renamed it Mansfield after their home state of Illinois. The townsite motto was "The Birthplace of Texan democracy" because all citizens were granted voting rights by state law starting with incorporation on November 3rd 1892. One of the first elections held in Mansfield was on November 3rd 1896 when all residents over 18 voted for mayor Harry Wigglesworth (later governor). In 1907, the city council decided to annex part of town and rename it "MansFIELD". On December 6th 1909, voters approved annexation which made Mansfield an official city with City Hall located on Elm Street within walking distance from most businesses and services including schools and churches. At that time, there were only two schools – one for boys and one for girls – and no hospital or post office. In 1915–1916 a large dam was built across Buffalo Creek to power a hydroelectric plant operated by Dallas Power & Light Company; this caused water levels to drop below original plans so construction began anew on channels parallel to Buffalo Creek upstream from present-day downtown Mansfield; these channels are still visible today although much lower due to erosion from runoff from agriculture operations upstream (the creek also provides drinking water for many small residences). The new mill closed down in 1929 but reopened as an antique store called The Antique Shop until it went out of business around 1990s On July 1st 1916 Pershing Road became US Highway 83 which led into town from I-35W; this road remained designation until May 5th 1957 when SB 632 took its current route through town becoming concurrent with US 83 southbound near present day Oldham Rd.; during that time Oldham Rd became known as Pershing Rd., coincidentally same name given to street once Main St./Hwy 183 crossed under it west of town limits prior to those changes

In 1840, the Mansfields moved to Dallas and became merchants and cattle ranchers. They also built a small courthouse and store on Elm Street. By 1851, the town had grown enough to incorporate as a city. On May 15, 1861, Confederate officers marched into Mansfield to arrest citizens who had sided with the South during the Civil War. Eleven people were killed and over fifty injured in what is known as the Battle of Mansfield City Limits.
