The Texaco Corporation built several large oil refineries in Mansfield during World War II. One refinery was built on Elm Street and it is currently known as Refinery Row #1. In 1947, Texaco merged with United States Petroleum Association (USP) to create Phillips Petroleum Company (PEP). PEP operates today as ExxonMobil Mobil Corporation

The town began as a small community on the banks of the Brazos River in 1876 and was named for Mansfield, Ohioan Major General James Fenton Mansfield. The first post office was established in 1880 and the first store opened in 1882. The town growth accelerated during World War I with an increase in cotton production and new housing developments. In 1925, Mansfield became part of Arlington County and experienced rapid growth due to its location midway between Dallas and Fort Worth on I-35W. However, growth stopped after World War II when Arlington County developed its own governmental structure. In recent years there has been a resurgence of development around the Town Center area with several new businesses opening up including Home Depot (2010), Lowe's (2011),believe it or not drycleaning services are now offered here too! There have also been some construction projects going on such as a new elementary school which will open this fall followed by another high school that is set to open later this year!
