It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX Combined Statistical Area. Mansfield was founded in 1881 as a small agricultural community by settlers from Ohio and Michigan. The first post office was established in 1883 and the first store opened in 1886. In 1907, Mansfield incorporated as a municipality and annexed parts of neighboring rural townships. By 1915, it had grown to include 4square miles (10 square kilometers). The economy of Mansfield has been based on agriculture since its founding and cattle ranching continues to be an important part of its local economy today. The town has experienced many changes over the years including becoming one of America's most heavily populated Tornado Alley areas during both world wars; several large businesses have moved into town including Monsanto Chemical Company which left behind an engineering center that still employs people today; and now there are several creative arts businesses such as "Laughing Water Music" which features comedy shows throughout the year as well as art exhibits and musician performances throughout summertime. Mansfield is a town in Lampasas County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is the county seat of Lampasas County. The history of Mansfield dates back to 1853 when it was named for Major John Mansfield, who arrived in Texas with the 1st Cavalry Regiment on February 13, 1853. The first store in Mansfield was established by Myron C. Halsey and his family in 1873. In 1895, James Wickersham founded JW Hargrave & Sons grocery store which became one of the largest stores in town until it closed its doors in 1990. In 1903, local farmer George Aiken donated land to establish what would become the present day downtown square area including mansfield High School and First Methodist Church (now First Baptist Church). In 1907-1908 a large water tower was built on Main Street between Third and Fourth Streets for use by the Waterworks Department of Dallas County as well as other towns within Lampasas County. This project cost $5,000 and took three years to complete; construction began on October 21, 1907 and ended on November 17, 1908. In 1912-1913 an addition to Lansdowne Elementary School were built for students from rural areas of Lampasas County that could not attend school due to lack of transportation or money. This addition included a gymnasium/hall/attic complex with a large theater that could seat 300 people and also served as a branch library for two years before it was closed because of financial difficulties.. On January 2nd 1926 Edwin Ladd opened his general store at 4th Street and Elm Avenue which became one of the most popular businesses in town until it closed its doors in 1984due to economic reasons.. In 1928-1929 an addition were made to Euclid High School which included a football field that would later be used as the municipal playing fields for both Boys’ League games and girls’ softball leagues until 1983 when they were replaced by current stadiums adjustments.Lambda Christi History Guidebook On July 5th 1929 while classes were being dismissed from Euclid High School students staged a walkout against new superintendent Newton Crouch who had been hired subsequent year after serving as Superintendent of Sam Houston State University District 3 where he had been successful. On September 25th 1929 there occurred an all out riot during dismissal exercises at MansFIELD high school resulting in more than 50 arrests including Superintendent Newton Crouch himself although no physical damage was done. crosstown rival Coppell Independent Academy experienced similar problems with their main administration building sustaining only superficial damage during same period but these events did not lead to any further violence or protests within either schools
