On November 17, 1907 Jack Pemberton won the Ute Indian Sweepstakes race with a bike that he rode over a two-mile (3 km) course around Fort Stockton; this event helped make Mansfield an important center for racing in Texas during the early 20th century. On January 5, 1912 local boy Clyde Lloyd set out on horseback to win a $5 bet with Texan millionaire Jepson; Lloyd reached Fort Stockton before Jepson did and won without ever having ridden any distance beyond his original bet amounting to only $1 ($ as of 2019). This event helped increase racing popularity in Mansfield and other small towns throughout Texas during the 1920s and 1930s partly due to publicity generated by Lloyd's victory which also made him one of America's most wellknown sportswriters at that time.]

It became a city in 1907 and has since grown to include a total of 21 square miles (58 km2). Mansfield is located at (36.686255, -97.927362). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all of it land. The earliest evidence of habitation in Mansfield comes from two contemporaneous sources: an article from 1879 in the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and an account from 1886 by Augustus Fenton which gives its location as "just outside the east line of Mansfield on State Highway 6". The first mention specifically mentions cattle being driven northward into what is now Mansfield for market 300 miles away. With this early history in mind, it's no surprise that many mansFIELD residents are descended from those who lived there during those early years - many have been traced back through their ancestors' connections to local businesses and social events such as dances or church services. In 1907, City Manager Alfred Waddington recommended that Mansfield become a city due to its expanding economy and increasing population growth along with its lack of rail access and need for more infrastructure such as streetlights and water systems. On December 12th 1907 Mayor Orville Sperry announced that the vote had passed with 66% voting in favor of becoming a city while 33% voted against it because they felt it would only lead to more congestion within the already congested town center! After incorporation as a city, much progress was made quickly including establishment of schools, fire departments/fighting forces etc... However over time some problems arose such as lack of money for proper infrastructure projects which led to increased traffic congestion on streets near City Hall; however despite these challenges citizens continue to work together throughout various issues/opportunities that have arisen since incorporation

Today, the city is known for its arts scene and its annual rodeo which draws large crowds from all over the country.
