Mansfield is a city inCollin County, Texas, United States. The population was 22,814 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is the 8th-largest city in Collin County and it is also one of the most populous cities in Texas. It lies on the north side of Interstate 35W just west of Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport. The area that would become Mansfield was first settled by Anglo-American pioneers in 1836. The town was named for General John A. Mansfield, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Texas. In 1849, an intersection formed by U.S., State and Mexican routes were called "Mansfield's Crossing" after General Mansfield's instructions to settlers there to avoid hostile Indians living near his army encampment on the Chisholm Trail from invading Mexico Territory during this time period. In 1872, when Fort Worth was founded as a military post nearby on what is now I-35W, Mansfield became part of Fort Worth because it lay within its boundaries at that time. In 1907, an oil refinery opened in nearby Arlington and soon began supplanting other small businesses with oil production becoming a big force driving growth for both towns; however, Arlington quickly outgrewmansFIELD due to high demand for housing development around the refinery site which led to increased traffic congestion throughout both entities without much improvement over many years until late 1990s when heavy industry gave way to residential development once again leading to increased growth while still managing large amounts of traffic congestion each day - something still faced today by residents who live close enough to enjoy all aspects including light rail service yet still have long commutes each morning or evening (check email notifications during office hours if you’re interested). Mansfield was founded in 1879 by William H. Mansfield and his wife, Anna. The town is located in Webster County, Texas on the border of Tarrant County. Mansfield is the seat of Webster County and is considered to be one of the most important cities in central Texas. In 1940, Mansfield was named a United States city by then-President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The population was 54,304 as of 2010. The original town plat for Mansfield was filed with the Webb County Judge on February 15, 1879. On that date, Wm H Mansfield donated land to the Webb County Board of Commissioners for $5 per acre (plus 50 cents per year thereafter). This donation made Mansfeld one of the first towns in Webb County and it still remains an important part of its history today. In 1840, when Texas became a state, William Hanchard built his home at what is now known as Fourth Street and Highway 6 near present-day Bastrop High School. Mr. Hanchard had come toTexas from Illinois via Missouri in search of a new home which he could improve and make his own money from cattle ranching operations he owned thereabouts[2]. He soon realized that this area would become an ideal place to build a community due to its natural resources: coal mines existed just east of town on I-30 and west on Highway 281; oil wells were discovered about two miles north on Highway 6; timber had been plentiful since before European settlement began[3]; and water availability was improved through surface navigation channels such as Trinity River [4]. In 1881, Mr. Hanchard sold his property to John Sinker for $10 per acre ($0 down or 3% annual interest). At this time, Austin became the capital city of Texas[5], so much so that Mr .Hanchard decided against moving his family back into their old home but instead leased it out to other farmers until he found someone who could develop it commercially[6]. By 1886 when Mr .Hanchard sold again (to George Fenton) for $15 per acre ($1 down or 5% annual interest), development had already started! He next leased it out again (to Jno Ewing) until 1901 when he finally bought it outright for $25 per acre ($2 down or 10% annual interest)[7][8][9]. From hereon out development continued rapidly with many more people arriving/ founding businesses including: A&P meat market (1893), First National Bank (1904), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1911), Packing House No 1 (1914), Mrs .Grantham’s grocery store(1920). Today’s downtown business district borders parts of these earlier pioneer days including First Baptist Church which dates back to 1907,[10] Seventh Day Adventist Church which opened up in 1912,[11] Masonic Temple No 1 also dating back 1914,[12][13] Chamberlin Library Building erected 1921,[14], Bastrop High School now known as Webster Middle School[15], etcetera etcetera…. mansfields tx history
