Mansfield was founded by General George Mansfield in 1842. Mansfield was named for him and the town is located on a large tract of land that had been donated by General Mansfield to the community. The first settler in Mansfield was Daniel Addison, who arrived in 1845. The town quickly grew and by 1853 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1861, the town became part of the newly formed Dallas County and remained so until 1998 when it was annexed into El Paso County.
