Mansfield's history can be traced back to 1827, when James White opened a store hereabouts and started trading goods with Mexicans living along I-10 between Austin and San Antonio. In 1829, White married Elizabeth Ann (Cummings) Smith, who had come from Mansfield East on her husband's family's plantation near present day Carthage. Over time other white traders followed White's lead, opening their own stores and contributing to the growth of Mansfield. By 1860, there were six businesses operating in Mansfield: three stores run by white men, one black manowned business operated by Isaac Cummings (the first African American to open a store in Texas), and two schools - one public school built by John Fenton (one of Johnson County’s earliest landowners) and one private school operated by Joshua Greenough (a teacher). In 1877, after more than 150 years as a small farming community with two stores and a post office serving mainly rural residents until its incorporation into Johnson County as an independent municipality status in 1907 following passage of the Texas Constitution providing for municipal boundaries withinJohnsonCounty; Mansfield became home to both its first ever female Mayor – Mrs A Benton Dickson – as well as its first African American mayor - Joseph Jealous II – soon after his election victory that year over incumbent Hiram Washburne Jr., son of Johnson County Judge Hiram Washburne Sr.. Townspeople voted against incorporation into Galveston because they felt their economy would suffer if they became part of Galveston while they continued to operate their own government under their own laws which they considered distinct from Galveston’s. Mansfield was founded by the Mansfield brothers in 1851 as a cattle ranch. The town was named for General John C. Smith, who had led the Texas Revolution and had been appointed governor of Texas in 1849. In 1890, Mansfield became an independent city. The community experienced growth during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the Red River Valley, which made it a popular tourist destination. During World War II, Mansfield was home to the United States Air Force's 56th Fighter Wing which operated from nearby Hill AFB.
