One of the most famous gun protections in Mansfield, Texas is the Battle of Adobe Walls. The battle began on October 18, 1881, when Confederate General John B. Magruder attacked a Union brigade under the command of Colonel George Armstrong Custer. The Confederates were successful in driving off the Union column and capturing several cannons. Commodore David Dixon had ordered his squadron of warships to blockade Mobile Bay and prevent Confederate reinforcements from reaching New Orleans. When news arrived of this action, Commodore Dixon decided to sail for Mexico City instead. On October 21st, he learned that Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House and was now prisoner on Richmond Island in Hampton Roads. Commodore Dixon decided not to surrender at any cost and sailed for Mexico City with his ships unescorted. After arriving there, he met with Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna and agreed to take possession of New Orleans if it were given back to the United States as part of a peace treaty between these two countries. This agreement never happened because America would soon become involved in World War I (1914-18). When America entered World War I, many citizens realized that they needed to be able to protect their homes from what seemed like an impending force against them: Germany. On November 8th, 1914, Congress passed an act known as “The National Firearms Act” which made it illegal for Americans without a license to possess any firearms outside of their home state or city limits! This law led directly to the first gun battles in Mansfield; on December 3rd 1911 between Ohioans Edwin Booth (better known as James Holmes) and John Wilkes Booth over control of a rifle range inside Ofcie Hall on West Elm Street; however both sides ultimately lost because Booth was finally apprehended before he could fire a shot! On January 6th 1915 members of the 9th Cavalry Regiment located five rifles belonging to Captain Charles Goodrich near Adobe Walls after hearing rumors that German soldiers were planning an attack on Mansfield. Goodrich knew that if he turned over these weapons immediately someone would likely die because there was no way for him or his unit to escape capture if war broke out again! However after some discussion it was decided that Goodrich should wait until morning so as not To give away too much information about where the weapons may be located; however when Goodrich woke up early next morning he heard gunshots coming from nearby buildings just east of Adobe Walls! He quickly ran towards those buildings hoping that someone had come down with small arms training so they could stop him before he could hit anyone! Unfortunately no one came running but rather three shots killed Goodrich instantly while another bystander also died from gunshot wounds later that day! It is interesting note how even today people still react differently when faced with threats such as this because often times we feel like we have nothing left except violence which can often lead us into dangerous situations!
