Mansfield is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,959 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town of Mansfield was founded in 1868 by John Pemberton and James Dickey as a small farming community on the east side of what is now Interstate 35E. By 1890, it had grown to include a school and three businesses: Pemberton's Store, Gilsdorf Hardware, and J.C. Penny Emporium. In 1902, the name was changed to Mansfield because of its location at the intersection of State Highway 24 (now I-35E) and U.S. Route 287 (now State Highway 105). In 1907, the first post office opened in Mansfield with letters "M." It continued to serve until 1959; after which it was operated by McAllister County until that county's merger into Williamson County in 2000. In 1870, surveyors found land for sale near present day Austin; however no settlers moved there until 1887 when John Pemberton sold 640 acres (2 km²) west of his previous farmstead on FM 1436 for $1 per acre ($27/km²). On July 1, 1888 – two years before Texas became an Republic – Pemberton voted to become an elector for Williamson County and contributed $5 to each candidate running for county commissioner that November election. In 1892 Jules Burch bought land from Pemberton northwest of town for $4 per acre ($64/km²). After years of hard work he began building what would become Burch Road which led directly from his farmstead across Bassett Creek into town center where he built a hotel called The Palace Hotel & Saloon which still stands today on Main Street between First Avenue and Commerce Street just east of current-day US 287 exit #2 off I-35E between Bassett Creek Road & US 287 exit #1A off I-35W On October 15th 1910 Charles Hargrave donated 100 acres (40 ha) northeast of town along FM 763 (later FM 620) towards Grimes Lake - this became known as Hargrave Ranch which ran concurrently with Burch Road through what is now downtown Mansfield . On November 12th 1920 Pershing Air Force Base started operations here providing aerial refueling opportunities over central Texas during World War II . In 1951 local citizens drove home their last nails during Hurricane Floyd when locals used power tools taken from government buildings damaged by Rita to hammer nails into doorframes throughout town resulting in only one casualty reported

Mansfield, Texas is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,873 at the 2010 census. Mansfield is located near the intersection of I-10 and US-283. It is part of the Amarillo metropolitan area. The first residents in Mansfield were three brothers who came to the location from Illinois in 1853. In 1854, they founded the First Baptist Church which still stands today. In 1857, David Ladd sold land to John Witherspoon for $4 per acre which became known as "Mansfield Place". By 1861, many settlers had arrived in what would become Medina County and two churches were built - First Baptist and Second Baptist - both of which remain standing today. In 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewing's brigade fought its way through Mansfield on their way to Battle Creek Campaign against General Ulysses S Grant's Union army northwest of Amarillo. As a result of this battle and others during that year, Mansfield emerged victorious with no damage or casualties reported on either side. Eight men were killed and thirteen wounded as a result of this skirmish within minutes of each other inside Mansfield’s limits! On November 1st 1865, while soldiers under Major General Alfred Terry (of Terry's Rangers) patrolled around town after dark looking for Confederates holed up inside homes following days of fighting at Fort Worth,[1] one resident observing the patrol noted an unusual sight: several white horsemen riding through town on horseback without any horses being led;[2] these individuals were later identified as members of Confederate Colonel John Neely Johnston's cavalry unit.[3] A few days later when troopers searched some residences on North Main Street they found 11 rifles including six Colt pistols hidden among dozens of flour sacks stored there by local farmers![4][5][6] Colonel Johnston had earlier defected to Union forces while stationed at Fort Worth with his forces before escaping into Mexico City disguised as a civilian! After reaching Mexican soil he quickly resumed military hostilities against President Andrew Johnson by joining Confederate General Braxton Bragg's aborted effort to cross over into Mexico seeking independence from America;[7][8][9] however upon learning about Johnson's impending re-election campaign he decided instead to return home safe & sound rather than fight alongside his former Confederacy comrades.[10] On election night December 3rd 1865 Johnston rode his horse into town claiming political asylum prior to crossing into Mexico City proper where he unsuccessfully attempted to gain admittance into the new republic;[11][12][13][/QUOTE] On November 1st 1865 during clashes between Confederate troops and Union civilians outside Mansfield due south towards Fort Worth another local resident observed unusual sights: several white horsemen riding through town unassisted by horses...these individuals soon became known as Colored Troopers belonging to Confederate Colonel John Neely Johnston’s cavalry unit...After slaying eleven Federal soldiers hereabouts with five Colt pistols apiece,[14], Johnston had earlier deserted Yankee ranks en route back home east towards Brownsville...Johnson now ordered MajorGeneral Alfred Terry (of Terry’s Rangers) not only not pursue but also retreat until further notice...Shortly thereafter 11 rifles including six Colt pistols were discovered buried among dozens of flour sacks cached by local farmers!
