Mansfield, Texas is a small town located in the Midwestern United States. The population was 3,856 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Travis County and the second most populous city in that county after Austin. Mansfield is also home to Texarkana State University and the Texas A&M Aggies football team. According to the USGS, Mansfield was settled by Germans in 1821 as part of Germanaura Township. The community was named for Samuel Mansfeld, an American fur trader who hadzhd(sic) land there in 1824. In 1854, it became part of McLennan County when it was organized from parts of San Marcos County. During World War II, local businesses produced munitions and other materials needed by the military effort; these activities led to increased traffic on main streets throughout town during wartime periods. After hostilities ended, many residents relocated inland or away from town because of high taxes and limited opportunities for economic growth outside of ranching and manufacturing sectors during peacetime times; however some returned back into town over time due to new opportunities available there postwar period .
