In 1861, Colonel Nathaniel Banks ordered Majors James Wimpole and Atherton Garland to take control of Fort Sumter for the Confederate States of America because he felt that black soldiers were unsuitable for military duty under white commanders because they were not physically fit or had other racial characteristics which could identify them as Union sympathizers. When their orders arrived at Mansfield, Garland took matters into his own hands and recruited local men to help him build an artillery battery to defend against Banks' attack on Fort Sumter; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of African American service within the United States military system. In 1865, when Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 988 creating Reconstruction South Carolina following its defeat by Confederate forces during the Civil War, Mansfield voted to secede from South Carolina but did not rename itself after Confederate General Robert E Lee because doing so would have been seen as supporting slavery alongside Southern states that had seceded from the Union). In 1870, when Tarrant County became part of Texas through an act of Congress approved by President Ulysses S Grant Allen), Mansfield reverted back to its original name: Wilkinson's Landing – anglicized form of "Mansfeld". After annexation by Texas occurred on February 14th 1959 due to a referendum held in November 1958 with over 96% voting yes,[2] most residents chose 'Texas' as their new state abbreviation instead[3]. On December 1st 1975[4], during Hurricane Agnes,[5] damage caused by water swept across much of central TX including parts of Mansfield making it uninhabitable for weeks; however most people made do with what they had–including many who evacuated before landfall.[6] On July 16th 1961[7], Cowboys Rodeo staged a show atFairgrounds Park adjacent to present day Ranch Road 620 about one mile west (southwest)ofpresent day US Route 287 south (northwest)ofMansford Center Drive; this event remains significant both historically[8][9][10]and nationally[11][12][13][14] because it markedthe first time professional rodeo performers visited North Texas since World War II and also helped start Cowboy Culture here which has continued uninterrupted ever since…Today there are more than 20 cowboy ranches operating throughout Tarrant County contributing importantlytotxsCowboy Heritage Trail [15].

Mansfield was founded by Austin and Family in 1836. The town was named after General John C. Mansfield, a military hero of the Mexican-American War. The community grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s, thanks to its location at the junction of two wagon paths that linked Texas with Mexico. By 1870, Mansfield had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1876, Mansfield became the county seat of McPherson County and soon developed into an important commercial center with several thousand residents. In 1915, Mansfield was annexed by Dallas County and today it is a part of the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
