Mansfield is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The first Europeans to arrive in Mansfield were French colonists in 1794. Mansfield was founded by Captain John Beal and his wife Esther Beal on March 3, 1836 as a result of his purchase of the Rancho Victoria from Juan Rodriguez de la Campa. In 1847, the town's first post office was established, and it remained in operation until 1902. In 1907, the townsite of Mansfield annexed the neighboring community of Arlington Heights. The annexation resulted in an overall population increase for both communities; Mansfield became one of the smallest towns in Texas with a population over 1,000 people. In 1911-12 (the last year for which data is available), Mansfield participated in Texas' statewide referendum to secede from the United States and become an independent country called Republic of Texas (it failed). Afterward, it reverted back to its original name: Mansfield Township/Village." In 1927-28 (the last year for which data is available), construction began on what would become Cowboys Stadium—later renamed AT&T Stadium after its founder and CEO James A. Turner—in downtown Mansfield Township/Village. The stadium hosted football games between Baylor University and TCU during the 1930s and 1940s before becoming home to other sports competitions including baseball (Texas League) and soccer (NAYL). Mansfield was founded in 1836 by Austin and Lucilla Mansfield. The town rapidly grew, becoming an important center for cattle and agricultural production. It was also a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1858, the townsite was named in honor of General Sam Houston. In 1907, Mansfield became one of the cities in Texas when it joined the state as a result of its annexation by Mexico.
