After World War II ended, demandfor wood products recommenced but slowly picked up due to environmental concerns; Lumberton nevertheless prospered until 1971 when it lost its charter as a city because of economic decline. In recent years, however, Lumberton has experienced some growth through tourism and business investment; it now enjoys an overall positive reputation as an attractive destination for both locals and visitors alike.
