Lumberton, Texas is a town located in Waller County, Texas. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Waller County. The townsite was founded by settlers in 1871. Lumberton's first post office opened in 1872. In 1914, it became the county Seat of Waller County and still serves as that role today. The railroad arrived in Lumberton in 1885 and helped to drive out the Texans from this region during the 19th century due to their tight control of resources hereabouts. However, after being bought by Gulf Oil Company in 1951, railroads were halted all throughout much of Texas until 1978 when they were re-opened along I-10 through Lumberton and other sections of rural Waller County making it an attractive center for business development with easy access to major metropolitan areas like Dallas/Houston or Austin/San Antonio. Today’s economy largely revolves around manufacturing such as lumber, plastics and electronics products; however there are also several small businesses situated within walking distance of most residents that continue to thrive thanks to strong support from government institutions like education, health care and agriculture which have remained key partners over time. With so many industries and businesses downtown – with plenty of festivals (including a Oktoberfest every year), bike races (including one on Saturday) and concerts happening every month – it can be hard not to find something interesting going on!
Lumberton was founded in 1885 by J.B. Lumber Company, a lumberyard and sawmill on the banks of the Nueces River. The town quickly became a center for mining and logging, with mills and mines throughout the area producing wood, coal, stone, lead, zinc and other minerals. In 1915 the Lumberton Electric Railway was completed to provide transportation to local businesses and manufacturing plants. The town's economy changed dramatically following World War II as production shifted from agriculture to industry; today Lumberton is home to a variety of businesses including a hospital, chemical plant and pulp mill.
