At first it was only a few log cabins and served as a trading post between Dallas and Fort Worth. In 1902, lumberman Harry Hanchett donated land to form what would become the town square and built the first schoolhouse in 1903. The community grew rapidly with waves of immigrants arriving over the years: Italians in 1915; Poles in 1918; Irishmen in 1922; Germans from Oklahoma in 1924; Mexican Americans from San Antonio in 1926; Vietnamese refugees from Southeast Asia from 1969-1973; and Native American tribes from Oklahoma Territory from 1904-1910. In 1957, Lumberton became one of thirty towns added to the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As MSA growth progressed, so did Lumberton's importance within this larger region. In 2000, Lumberton hosted its first annual fair which attracted more than $200 million worth of economic activity to its downtown areas alone during two days of shopping and cultural attractions including an arts festival and rodeo events. The success of this event led to increased visitation for local businesses throughout the year as well as expansions into other tourist destinations such as Arlington (west), Mesquite (north), Grapevine (south) and Plano (east). The current downtown redevelopment project began full throttle in 2006 when contractor JDS Contractors announced plans for an approximately $135 million mixed-use development which will include 585 residential units (+/- 50%); 27 commercial spaces (+/- 10%); 3 ballparks (-/+ 25%); 2 office buildings (-/+ 20%); 1 hotel (+/+ 10%); 2 golf courses (-/+ 10%). With continued growth momentum expected through 2020/21 results areanticipated indicating strong demand for both housing units & commercial space within this new district while still maintaining access to transportation options nearby via I-635 & Beltline Expressway providing easy access to jobsites & shopping malls!

Lumberton is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Lumberton has a rich history dating back to when it was an unincorporated community located near what is now the city of Round Rock. In 1878, John Fenton and his family arrived from Ohio with plans to start a mill in what would become Lumberton. The community quickly grew and soon became known for its high-quality lumber products. The Fentons ran the mill until their death in 1916, leaving it to their son-in-law, David Wylett, and his wife, Minnie Hildebrandt Wylett to continue the business until it closed in 1976. During its time as a mill town Ralston Paper Company was established here and manufactured paper products including towels and tissue paper before moving out of town in the early 1990s. Lumberton also played host to various civic events throughout its history such as Fourth of July celebrations (1906), State Fair (1974), Riverfest (1985), Oktoberfest (1992) and Christmas lights display (2006). In 2006 Lumberton hosted WorldFest which brought together exhibitors from all over the world at the Community Center Park during downtown Lumberton's annual arts festival event In May 2013, Lumberton celebrated its centennial year with various Celebrations including: A Jug Band Day parade; bluegrass music concert featuring local artist Joe Cocker at First Baptist Church on Main Street; Obie Awards presented by Chamber Music Society of Greater Austin & Obie Awards Night dinner at Native American Casino Resort; “From Logging To Living” exhibit open air viewing party beginning at 6pm on Saturday evening followed by dinner served inside Harvey’s restaurant at 7pm
