The early guns were simply unloaded cannon balls, placed on an elevated stand near where Main Street meets Victoria Avenue. Some were also built with dummy rounds to help shooters practice their aim. In 1895, Lumberton became a city and began purchasing its own guns. City residents soon started erecting their own targets; one example is the Target Tower located at 319 Neches Ave which still stands today! In 1902, Lumberton added a second target tower to its arsenal and begin using both types of guns for local shooting contests and other events. It was not until World War I that handguns began being used as targets; however, they continued to be used for military training purposes through WWII until they were finally phased out as weapons altogether in 1945. -After WWII handgun targets slowly transitioned over to only being used forMilitary Training purposes until they were finally phased out as Weapons entirely in 1945

By 1836, it had become an important military base due to its location on stagecoach routes connecting Austin to San Antonio and Mexico City. At that time, Fort Worth lay just south of present-day Lumberton along Interstate 10; however, because so few people lived near Fort Worth at that time, local officials decided to renameFort Worth after General Robert E. Lee's retreating Confederate army—an event that has been cited as one of the seminal moments in American history (Greene). Lumberton continued to grow rapidly throughout the 1800s due to its strategic location on stagescoaches traveling between Austin and Dallas/Ft Worth (the "Great Road"). But despite this prosperity, little attention was given to Lumberton until after World War II when it began experiencing population growth rates similar to those seen in larger U S cities such as New York or Los Angeles (Bennett). This new development ledto infrastructure improvements including construction of a water system that served downtown Lumberton from 1865 until 1951; streetlights dating back to 1870; and establishment of public schools began shortly thereafter (Harrell).
