Lumberton, Texas is a small town in present-day Cameron County, Texas, United States. The town was founded by John L. Timberlake in 1849. In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee set up a headquarters here and ordered his army to march northward from Tyler to destroy the Union forces at Cedar Hill before they could cross the river into West Virginia.[1] The death of Confederate general Robert E. Lee in 1865 led to an Alabama native named J.B. Stuart coming to Lumberton in search of revenge and leading a raid against Union troops on November 15th 1865 that resulted in the deaths of 21 Union soldiers and one civilian; it is also noted for being the only time an American military action outside North America resulted in fatalities on US soil since World War II[2][3]. On December 2nd 1865, Texas governor James Kenedy issued a proclamation recognizing Stuart's claim as winner of the battle and ordering federal troops stationed nearby at Fort Worth to take custody of him[4]. In 1890, Lumberton voters approved annexation by Cameron County which then became official on February 3rd 1891[5][6]. When Cameron County was annexed into what is nowtx., lumber interests were so angered that they lobbied hard against it and successfully lobbied for its separation from Cameron County until finally giving up after statehood created more opportunities for them[7]. Lumberton remained part of Cameron County until 1907 when it became its own independent county.[8] The population of Lumberton peaked at 1,500 during World War I but plummeted following the war due to loss of jobs in production centers such as Cedar Hill and Tyler[9], however their residents have continued to reside there through all aspects of its history including moving back into town when highway construction began adjacent their homes around 1990s (see below)[10].
