Construction began on what would become known as "The Big One" in 1957 – an original 6 million board feet (2 million m3) Log Jam plant designed by noted Americanindustrialist Drayson Wright – soon followed by other large projects at The Big One including a gasification plant (1961), a kraft paper mill(1964), a plastics factory(1966), an electrical substation(1968), two hospitals (1974-1975) as well as numerous smaller buildings! A major fire destroyed most of The Big One in 1978 but new construction continued with another LOGJamplant being built just east of current day downtown; this time called THE BIG 2! This massive project employed some 2700 workers for over 4 years creating employment opportunities for local residents throughout those years! In 1990 US Steel relocated their primary steel fabrication operations from Mexico to nearby Erath County after 50 years manufacturing steel here at The Big Two; this event also ushered in what has come to be known as "the Rust Belt Revival" bringing new life to communities such as Amarillo and Lumberton that had been struggling economically since beforeSteel left our shores !
