On the morning of November 5, 1968, Lumberton was the site of one of the largest gunfights in its history. The shootout began when two rival gangs, the Black Panthers and the Young Lords, clashed over control of a local convenience store. Twelve people were killed and more than twenty-four were wounded in what is now considered to be one of Texas' most violent crimes. The shootings inspired Lumberton's first gun owner education class, which met for three weeks in May 1969. The class was taught by Independent School District Superintendent Franklin Neely and Sheriff Jay Woodruff from neighboring Vernon County. At that time, Texas did not have an open carry law and handguns were only allowed to be carried with a concealed handgun license (CHL). In order to teach about firearms safety and how to use them safely, the class also demonstrated how to fire a revolver using live rounds at close range. In 1975, NRA instructor Bob Kapp organized a reunion of Lumberton's gun owners who had attended the NRA's National Meeting on Arms in Dallas that year. Over 150 participants gathered at City Hall Park for dinner before taking turns firing shotguns into the air as part of target practice. That same year, NRA members inducted Sheriff Woodruff into their rolls as an honorary member. Later that year, state Representative Garnet Coleman sponsored House Bill 1029 which made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess or buy any type of firearm without a background check. This measure passed overwhelmingly in both houses but was vetoed by then Governor John Connally because he felt it would infringe on Second Amendment rights . After six months of wrangling with the governor, House Bill 1029 finally became law on January 3rd , 1976 after being amended several times . The new legislation required all rifle purchases above $200 must be completed by fax or email so that fingerprints could be taken; provided that buyers resided within 50 miles of each other; possessed no more than two items per hand; and had not been convicted five times within ten years previous

The Lumberton Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892, the first rifle club in Lumberton. The club met at a local lumberyard where members could shoot rifles and pistols. In 1912, the club moved to its current location on Longstreet in downtown Lumberton. The membership grew to over 100 by 1920. In 1949, the Lumberton Rifle and Pistol Club changed its name to the Texas Association of Rifle and Pistol Clubs (TAGP). TAGP became an affiliate member of the National Rifle Association (NRA) in 1951. In 1976, TAGP merged with the Texas Firearms League (TFL) to become one organization.
Lumberton, Texas is a small town in Defiance County, Oklahoma. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered by Canadian Creek to the south, US-69 to the east, and Cache Creek to the north. It has a total area of 2.6 square miles (6.7 km²). Lumberton was founded in 1875 as a Methodist Settlement on land donated by Samuel Hargrave. The community grew rapidly after oil was discovered in Butler County in 1901 and lumber became one of the few industries in town. In 1907, Lumberton successfully lobbied for statehood and incorporation as a city; it had a population of 3,000 residents by 1920. A school district was established in 1922 and remains operational today. The mill complex at Lumberton Avenue and US- 69 were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988; they are now known as Sam Houston State University's Mill Complex.
In the early 1900s, many Americans were fascinated by firearms and the shooting sports. A few American companies made these products to appeal to this interest. In 1916, Lumberton became a county seat and has since thrived as an agricultural and manufacturing center. Today, Lumberton is a small but vibrant community with a rich history that offers visitors plenty to explore. Here are some of the most important events in Lumberton's history: 1) The first school in Lumberton was built in 1847. This school was used until 1871 when it was replaced by the present high school. 2) In 1916, Lumberton became a county seat and soon developed into one of Texas' leading agricultural towns. This growth led to the establishment of many successful businesses including Joplin Chalk Co., Poultry & Egg processors, Texaco Refinery, and current tenant strip mall developer Radisson Blu Portfolio Properties Incorporated (formerly known as Starwood Management Company). 3) One of the most significant moments in local history came during World War II when over 100% of all lumber production within Texas came from within the town limits. This influx of industry helped boost the economy which continued to grow through the postwar years. In recent years, much attention has been given to Lumberton's revitalization efforts; this has included numerous renovations both inside and outside of its boundaries. For example, new shopping malls have been established near downtown and other parts of town while restaurants have reopened after being closed for many years. Despite these changes, however, many residents remain committed to their historic community which continues to thrive today
Lumberton was founded in 1851 by James Fenton and his wife, Ann. The town became a stop on the Santa Fe Trail and developed as a center for lumber production. Lumberton also served as the capital of Texas from 1861 to 1865. The town was destroyed in an 1872 fire, but re-emerged as a small farming community until the early 21st century.
