Lumberton is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north bank of the Brazos River. Lumberton was founded by German immigrants in 1847. The first post office was established in Lumberton in 1849. The name of the town originated from a sawmill that was built there by local men to get wood for their homes and businesses. The mill closed in 1865, but lumber continued to be produced until it was discontinued completely in 1907 during World War I due to over-production. The original courthouse building still stands today and is used as a community center. In 1915, Lumberton became an independent municipality with its own government and school district. In 1958, it merged with Ellis County to form a larger city called Lumberton-Ellis County which retained its separate government until 1985 when it became part of the Houston metropolitan area. Lumberton has many cultural attractions including the Sawmill Museum (opened in 1978), which tells the story of the history of lumber production from pre-Civil War days through present day; a Carnegie Library (opened 1937); several churches including First Baptist Church (1907), Trinity Presbyterian Church (1896), St John's Episcopal Church (1899) and Christ Episcopal Church (1906); as well as two golf courses - North American Golf Course (built 1945) and Timberline Golf Course(1892). Lumberton is a small town in the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Lubbock, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1887 by George W. Lumber and his family. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. In 1990, Lumberton became an annex to Midland, Texas afterMidland's annexation by Austin. The first settlers in what is now Lumberton were George W. and Nancy (Patterson) Lumber who came from Vermont in 1839 and 1840 respectively. They began the lumber business with their two horses and one wagon which they sold to local farmers for shipping fuel to their sawmills. By 1845, they had built a larger mill on the creek where it enters Coyote Creek outside of town limits today. The next year they married Martha Patterson and started farming land around the mill site with 10 cows and 5 pigs which produced hay, oats, potatoes, turnips and other vegetables for local markets as well as hogs for meat market trade until 1865 when their son John bought out their father's interest in the farmstead; continuing to produce hay, oats, potatoes etc., until 1909 when he retired from farming due to bad health conditions that led him to sell most of his holdings back to George W.'s widow Martha Atheridge Witherspoon who continued operating it until her death in 1951 alone (it was then passed down through three generations). In 1890 George W. Lumber Jr.. purchased 640 acres northwest of town limits from J C Johnson for $4 per acre ($36 per lot). This addition made up much of what is now Midland Township; however it only became part of Lubbock County effective November 29th 1870 when Fort Worth County was organized including all present-day Dallas County boundaries southward (the following day Tarrant County was Organized northward). The first post office at Loganton opened on December 15th1890 (the date still used today by mail), named after MrGeorgeWLuther--a postmaster general appointed by President Grover Cleveland--to improve communication between Midland & surrounding towns during construction of Trinity River Bridge over Big Branch Brazos River west of Midland servicing both Midland & cattle driving interests eastbound along that river about 4 miles long connecting those two cities (& parts of Richardson) across Trinity River just upstream from present day downtown LBJ also called “ Loganton” split off from this early community getting its name because General Sherman's Headquarters were located there during World War II as well as later LBJ Presidential Mansion In 1911 the railroad arrived providing transportation for goods coming into/out of midlanders mills so people could no longer go into town & buy things there like groceries or fabrics etc.; instead they went out into rural areas buying everything neededresembling today's shopping malls across America some 150 years later MrsMarthaAtheridgeWitherspooncontinuedoperatingLoganton Mill till her death in 1951 while her son John ran it until his sale too late changed its name back again to Loganton Industrial Park
