In 1881, Lumberton had its first binoculars. The town was founded by pioneers in 1879 and soon began to grow. In order to provide good vision for the farmers and merchants who lived in the town, a millinery shop and a few other businesses were built. In 1881, one of the early businessmen, Amos Hagee, bought two telescopes from a group of men who had set out to find new land in Texas. He used the telescope to view things he couldn't see with his naked eyes. This led him to start selling binoculars and eyeglasses in Lumberton. By 1886, business had grown so much that Hagee decided it was time to build his own store. In 1893, he opened an addition on the back of his store which became known as the "Binocular Building." From then on, Lumberton'sbinoculars industry would continue until at least 1926!

However there are also many professional people living in Lumberton including business owners who commute to Dallas or Fort Worth for work reasons; as well as students from nearby colleges such as Rice University and UT Austin who live in annexed communities within Lumberton's city limits but attend school outside of city limits while still claiming allegiance to their home town. The downtown area is home to businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Verizon Wireless billing headquarters (one mile south of downtown), Barnesand Noble bookstore chain (just north of Interstate 10), two churches (Anglican and Methodist) and several restaurants including Waffle House and Grille du Jeu which attract tourists from all over Metroplexes during peak tourist season. The main street that runs through downtown is Main Street which serves as an artery for traffic moving between different parts of town with businesses located on each side streets branching off Main: North Side streets lead to Oak Lawn Avenue which leads east into Uptown/Westwood Village; South Side streets lead to Smith Road which leads west into Little Elm Valley

In 1907, James Waddell founded Waddell & Co., which became one of the largest lumber companies in Texas before merging with Case & Hastings in 1935. During World War II, Lumberton maintained its role as an important manufacturing center for aircraft parts because of its location near Wichita Falls and Fort Worth.. After the war ended, many factories closed down or were sold off; however, Lumberton remained an important manufacturing community until it ceased operations in the early 1970s whenITT moved its headquarters from Wichita Falls to Dallas (nowDallas/Fort Worth). Today there are few businesses that remain operational within Lumberton besides those related to agriculture or tourism; however people continue to live and work hereabouts despite these challenges. One major reason why this small town has managed to stay afloat over time is its strong sense of community spirit which has helped contribute to development within the area while also preserving historical artifacts such as old mills and homes dating back more than 100 years
