The town's first mayor was Hosea Butler. In 1925, Lumberton installed its own water system. In 1945, Lumberton became a city and passed an ordinance that made it illegal to sell alcoholic beverages without a license from the city government. In 1948-1949, Lumberton hosted the Texas state fair which attracted many businesses to the town. Lumberton is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. Lumberton is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lumberton was founded in 1853 by Captain James W. McMurtry and his wife Elizabeth as a stop on the stagecoach route between Fort Worth and Dallas. In 1875, the McMurtry family sold their share of the town to John Cockerill and his brother-in-law, Elisha Sweeny. That year saw the first post office established in Lumberton with Wm. Hutton as its first clerk. In 1907, John Denton moved from Arlington to take over management of Lumberton's affairs from his father-in-law, Elisha Sweeny Sr.. Denton served as mayor from 1913 until 1917; he also served as alderman from 1919 until 1923. He died in 1925 and was buried at Oak Forest Cemetery in Arlington Heights, Illinois. In 1925, Mayor Denton's widow donated land for a new high school that would serve Lumberton's citizens since they were not able to attend Arlington High School located elsewhere in Midland County (the old school had been destroyed by fire). The present day high school building was completed in 1930 and named after Mayor Denton's widow – Mrs.Jimmie Renshaw Denton High School (now known as McKinney Independent School District No.-2). The lumber industry played an important role in early life of Lumberton with many businesses opening up along Main Street during this time including: J J Smith & Sons livery stable which operated for over 60 years starting 1923 until it closed 1933; Alcorn Mills which produced both millinery items such as hats and shrouds before closing down c 1910; G B King & Son store which opened 1918 selling hardware supplies including nails, screws and other household objects before becoming a record store; Howe Mfg Co who built three large wagons used for carrying logs across country before being shut down c 1908 by prohibition laws
