Lumberton is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. The first settler in Lumberton was John Beasley in 1845. He and his family founded a cabin on a hill near what is now Lumberton High School. The Beasley Cabin still stands and offers visitors an excellent view of the town center from its windows. In 1849, James Fenton bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of land west of Lumberton for $5 per acre ($100 total). He named it "Fenton's Ranch" after his British father-in-law, Sir Charles Fenton (1784-1857). In 1850, he built a log cabin on the ranch and started to grow crops. In 1851 he married Amanda Mears and they moved to their new home. They had two children: James A., who became an attorney and legislator; and Amanda J., who became a teacher and social worker in Lumberton. In 1861, when Confederate forces attacked Fort Worth during the American Civil War, Fenton joined forces with local Republicans to fight against the Confederacy. After several months of fighting, he surrendered at Camp Bowie outside Lumberton on April 12th 1865 with nominal loss to Union troops over 10 killed/30 wounded - all but one man being Pvt James Alevin whose death has never been positively determined although there are some suggestions he may have perished as well due to disease or wounds received while retreating from camp that day. After the war ended, Fenton returned home to start again life on his farmstead which included many animals including three hogs which were very important for early agriculture in this region because hogs could provide both meat and hides for clothing etc.. On July 16th 1870 Amanda gave birth to their third child James Jr., also known as Dollar Bill or Big Jimmie because of his size at 6’2” (1m 91⁄2 inches). That same year saw another important event when farmers elected Mr Hargrave as mayor after being disqualified by state officials because they felt he did not meet qualifications set out by law To date this would be the last time men held office within the limits of Tarrant County until 1907 when Judge Harry Waddell was elected Mayor
Lumberton was founded in 1859 by James L. Timberlake and his wife, Martha Jane. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Santa Fe Railroad and its access to timber resources. In 1870, lumber companies started building railroads throughout the region, which led to more people moving into the town. By 1900, Lumberton had a population of over 3,500. However, the town's growth stopped after World War I because of lack of available jobs.
