Lumberton is a small town in Beaumont County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,796 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lumberton was founded by John Luton in 1859 and was named after lumberjacks who were active on the nearby Red River. Luton later became a post office and general store proprietor. In 1881, he donated land for the first school in Lumberton. The first building was a log cabin and served as a school until it burned down in 1903. A new school was built on the same site and served from 1903 to 1957. In 1907, Luton donated land for an Agricultural Experiment Station which operated until 1934. In 1912, Joicey Gorman became municipal treasurer and began to invest local money in various businesses such as oil well drilling and cattle ranching ventures. Gorman's son-in-law, W Hargrave, ran for mayor three times but never received more than 50 percent of the vote each time due to his lack of political experience or financial resources. On November 3, 1938 local residents voted not to ratify World War II military draft laws proposed by then-Governor Ross Barnett because they felt that such measures would only benefit soldiers away from home who could not be drafted into service because of their health problems or lack of manpower (). Afterward Gorman announced his candidacy for governor against incumbent James Mancell Harnden with the slogan "A Better Tomorrow For All Texans". On November 6th 1938 another special election was held to fill one seat on the U S Congress vacated by Democrat Lloyd Bentsen when he won the gubernatorial race against Ross Barnett (). Although Harnden had been beaten handily by Gorman prior to this election he filed suit seeking damages from Bentsen for libelous accusations made during campaign season about Harnden's personal finances (). The case went all the way to court where it emerged that Bentsen had deliberately withheld information about profits made from government contracts from Hargrave so as not to damage Harnden's image within his own party (the Facts & Figures report contained confidential data about Army troop movements). Ultimately Bentsen conceded defeat without any formal judgement being rendered and withdrew from politics entirely; this event is known locally as "The Oil Rig Scandal" (). Since its founding Lumberton has experienced periodic boom/bust cycles with respect to its economy although recent years have seen some stability thanks largely to advances in technology which has brought increased business opportunities onto Main Street including restaurants, retail stores and even an online store catering specifically to lumberjack friends/family residing outside of Texas

During World War II Lumberton was home to American Airlines Flight 3590 which crashed into a tree off Airport Boulevard in 1996 killing all six people aboard The economy of Lumberton has steadily grown over the years with manufacturing and service businesses taking up space inside and outside of what once were small schools and churches. The current downtown core features several large shopping malls including Sears, Walmart, Macy's, Kmart, Best Buy, Comic-Con International (the largest comic book convention in North America), Bank of America Stadium (formerly University Park Stadium), as well as many smaller businesses such as Lowes Home Hardware & Garden Store and Joe's Pizza Place which have been around for decades or have been newly built since 2000.
