During this time period too there were major real estate redevelopment projects such as Shell Petroleum Refinery on Highway 69/Upper Sam Houston Parkway which replaced a derelict refinery dating back to 1917(), Sears Tower (which now stands vacant) on Interstate 695 just north of downtown (), PNC Plaza - also off I-695 - housing several large retailers including Macy's ()and JCPenney (). Today some aspects of that success remain unchanged with retail concentrations concentrated along I-635/Sam Houston Parkway near downtown while others like Moody's have been replaced or completely redeveloped with larger stores including Sears Holding Company () at 2111 Independence Mall Dr., KFC (); anchor tenants include Subway sandwich chain (); Barnes & Noble (); Lowe's Home Improvement (); AT&T ()); among others. Today there are over 100 Fortune 500 companies headquartered here including 20% concentration by Apple Incorporated ().
