Lufkin is a small town in Texas, located about 30 miles south of Houston. The city was founded in 1879 by John Wesley Hogg and became an important manufacturing center for eastern Railroad companies in the early 20th century. Lufkin's growth began to slow after World War II, as the area became more dependent on agriculture. However, the town has seen a resurgence in recent years due to its location within the Science and Technology Corridor and its strong industry presence. In 1967, optical manufacturers Brown & Williamson and Philips merged to formPhilips-Brown&Werner. In 1984, Brown & Williamson merged with American Optical Association (AOA) to become Lufkin-American Optical Association (LAA). In 2001, AOA merged with BrightLink Corporation to become Lufkin BrightLink Corporation (LBC). Today, LBC is one of the leading optical equipment dealers in North America. Lufkin is a town in Texas, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is located in southeastern Oklahoma County. Lufkin was founded by Captain James Fenton on May 7, 1836 as Fort Worth deeded to him by the Creek Nation. A post office called Lufkin was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it closing in 1959. The first permanent settler of Lufkin was Captain James Fenton who arrived on May 7, 1836 with a small party of settlers from the Creek Nation. In 1840, a school building and tannery were built near present day intersection of US-287 and FM 939. In 1865–66 an oil well was drilled and production began which led to the town's name change to "Lufkin" after John Dolphus Flagler Sr.'s company leased land from what is now The Gila River Indian Reservation for $1 per acre (0.50 oz/acre). By 1870 oil had become such an important industry that citizens erected a hotel and store complex at Main Street and Third Avenue just east of downtown Lufkin on December 12th that still stands today known as the "Flagler Hotel". A fire destroyed most of downtown Lufkin on January 15th 1889 but attempts to rebuild continue until today resulting in much historical preservation being done throughout the community including several museums (the largest one being the State Museum Annex) as well as numerous local government buildings dating back to 1898 including City Hall which remains operational today despite some major restoration efforts completed recent years including repainting all exterior walls both inside & outside; adding new sidewalks etc.; entire Historic District has been completely redone since 2008!
