Lufkin is a town in Texas, located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census, making it the most populous municipality in Harris County and one of its five counties. Lufkin is also included within the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, which has an estimated population of 20 million people. It is bordered by Waller County to the north, Chambers County to the east, Trinity County to the south and Houston Bayou on its west side. Lufkin was founded as a small post office called "Logan" in 1873 by Methodist missionaries under the name "Hutchinson". The post office was renamed "Lufkin" in 1907 after General James Biddle Lufkin who fought with distinction during World War I. The first store opened in 1912 and a post office remained open until it closed on September 25, 1960 due to annexation byHouston. The Post Office Department reopened on October 1st with new mail facilities near what is now Interstate 10 and US 90/US 281 interchange. Lufkin's history begins with pioneer Hilda Gorman who emigrated from Ireland with her husband John Gorman around 1870s and started trading goods along Cache Creek Watercourse before selling land near present day University Park across from Baylor University (now part of Rice University). They named their new settlement after General James Biddle Lufkin who had helped them purchase this land several years earlier while serving as Commandant of Allied Forces troops stationed at Fort Sam Houston during American Civil War hostilities there at Corpus Christi Naval Station (now Fort Bend county). Eventually other pioneers followed suit including J C Whitehead who operated a grocery store from 1915-1920; banker Harry Womack from 1922-1924; Mr Folsom from 1925-1929; Clyde Kappe from 1930-1935; Pappy Claxton 1936-1939; Wm Parsons 1940-1945; Roy Jacobs 1946-1950; and Leroy Denton 1951-. In early 1959 when local citizens ratified an ordinance calling for annexation byHouston, they also voted for incorporation into Harris County as an unincorporated community providing opportunity for more businesses to locate hereabouts However this did not come about as planned because City Council members felt that incorporation would give too much power to Houston over Lufkin's affairs while opponents argued that incorporation would create another city within Harris County without any real representation or control over its affairs which they felt would erode trust between city government and residents therein leading eventually to split authority over both entities until fully merged into one Municipality under current Houston governance effective January 1st 1960
