Lufkin is a town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,835 at the 2010 census. Lufkin is the county seat of Collin County. It was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1881. The first mention of Lufkin occurs in 1881 when James Hargrave written to his cousin John Hargrave about finding a place for him and his family to live until he could find land east of the Red River. On July 1, 1881, Wm. Averill donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land to the town on what is now Main Street. The first post office was established in Lufkin on October 5, 1881. By 1886, Lufkin had developed into an agricultural community with plantations and orchards producing cotton and other crops. In 1896 local doctor Drury opened a general hospital which became known as "The First Hospital in Texas". In 1907–08 Major J C Galbraith built a two-story frame schoolhouse at Fourth and South streets for $1,000 (). When World War I began in 1914, many soldiers from nearby Fort Worth enlisted and set up camp near Lufkin under command of Sgt Jack Rea (). After being discharged from service they returned home and started businesses such as trucking services that continued until the early 1960s when oil exploration began settling down around Lufkin making it more difficult to do business than ever before.; Consequently many businesses closed their doors during this time; however some went on to prosper like Carpet & Wallpaper store which reopened after years closed due to lack of customers or competition from new stores coming online. cattle ranchers also came into town during this time; one such rancher was P M Lowry who operated a herd of over 100 cows that grazed on 8 miles (12 km) long Arcadia Ranch north of town.
