As part of the surrender agreement, Confederate General Robert E Edgecombe surrendered his guns and ammunition to Union troops. This event is often cited as the beginning of gun barrel production in Lufkin. The following year saw the opening of a rifle factory run by A&P Rifle Works LLC in nearby Commerce City. This company manufactured rifles for both sides of the war until it closed its doors in 1865. From then on, gun barrels became a more common commodity in Lufkin thanks to this new industry development. During Reconstruction time (1870-1877), gun barrels continued to be produced here at a high level due to their importance during this time period for ammunition production and military purposes alike. However, with machineguns becoming prevalent in warfare after America’s victory over Europe at World War I, demand for these products began to dwindle rapidly throughout most of North America due to competition from European manufacturers. Lufkin, Texas is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, Texas, United States. It was founded on November 15, 1881 by J.D. Lufkin and Wm.H. Harger as a small town on the banks of the Sabine River. The name "Lufkin" comes from the Creek word "iluk" meaning "a place where water flows." The original post office was opened in 1881 and closed in 1902; it reopened under new management in 1903 and remained open until 1935. The first school was built here in 1881; it closed in 1902 but reopened as Lufkin School #2 in 1903. The first store was built here in 1886 and closed around 1907-1908; it reopened as the Lufkin Store #1 in 1908. In 1915 Gertrude Gilmore married J.D.'s brother Sam Houston (1828-1915). They moved to San Antonio to start their own family after Sam's election as President of the United States (he had been running for office for three years). In 1921 they returned to Lufkin and started a grocery store called The Gilmore Store which continued until its closure circa 1951 when Gertrude passed away suddenly at age 80 years old with no children to take over the business Her death created a void that has yet to be filled
Lufkin was founded in 1836 by the Stephens family. Lufkin became an important cotton center in Texas during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town was destroyed by a fire in 1915, but was rebuilt and renamed after its original founder, John Lufkin.
