Lufkin, Texas is a small town in Lee County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Lufkin is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. The Lufkin Independent School District has three schools - Lufkin High School, Little Rock Elementary School and East Bowie Elementary School - and two churches - First Baptist Church and Presbyterian Church. The first people to live in what is now Lufkin were the Comanches and their allies who settled there around 1800. A post office was established at Lufkin on November 2, 1836, by James Hogg. In 1865, when Fort Worth was founded as the capital of Texas under General Sam Houston, John Denton laid out an area for a town called "Denton's Landing" on the lower Brazos River near present-day Lufkin Creek Bridge. When land sales stopped after Reconstruction following the Civil War, Denton developed his land into Dentontown which became known as "Luffin." In 1872 pioneer Winton Brawley built a cabin about east of present day Main Street; this was later named Brawleyville after him. In 1875 Jethro Tull organized a group of ten men from Junction City (now Tyler) to travel westward overland to Wichita Falls then north through Austin to find new lands where they could settle until they reached their destination: Wichita Falls in August alone they had traveled more than 3000 miles (4800 km). They found no takers for their venture so returned home within three weeks without finding any new places to settle down or prospecting for oilfields that may have lied ahead but instead completed one of America's great open-air dramatic tours with its twenty passengers including Edwin Drake in command On July 10th 1880 Elisha Sargent arrived at Wichita Falls with his six hundred acres (2 ha) property on top of Mockingbird Hill southeast of downtown Wichita Falls hoping to develop it into an oilfield but he did not succeed because he failed to secure title deeds from interested parties other than himself before leaving for Oklahoma City on July 9th 1880 having already exhausted all his money trying to do so After failing again several years later in 1886 he sold some additional land including Mockingbird Hill east of downtown Wichita Falls back to Elisha Sargent but died suddenly only days before taking possession due largely theretofore unfulfilled expectations about producing oil therefrom even though he had drilled sixty wells during an eight year period starting in 1875 none showing evidence of success save one test well prematurely abandoned in 1889 less than four months after being drilled; this well has never been re-drilled since despite numerous attempts by various individuals since 1980 also failures by seismic surveys ever finding any indications whatsoever that this previously unsuspected natural gas field might bebeneathsurface disclosure On November 5th 1903 Gertrude Bacon married Clyde Culp Jr., son of Clyde Culp Sr., owner/operator/developer/stranger miner etc., promoter etc., co-founder etc., organizer etc.; founder father figure local history
