Lufkin, Texas is a small town in the Midland region of Texas. It was founded in 1877 by citizens of Sam Houston's original territory. Lufkin is located on the Gulf Coast and is home to many naval and air installations. The town has a population of about 66,000 people as of 2010. Lufkin was one of twelve towns incorporated into Galveston County, Texas on February 14, 1879. The first post office in Lufkin was established on March 2, 1879. On October 3, 1880, the townsite was renamed Fort Worth after General John J. Pershing's military victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Creek Bridge near San Antonio during the Mexican–American War. In 1915-1916 an oil refinery/refinery complex were built adjacent to present day Booker T Washington Boulevard west of downtown; this complex still stands today as part of ExxonMobilTexaco Refinery Complex#1B & BP Chemical Refinery Complex#2A & Cargill Inc.'s Tyson Foods Factory #3A & B which are all now part of KBR Inc.'s Tyson Supermarkets Operations Center #4A & B which are also now part of Walmart Inc.'s Supercenter at Willowbrook Shopping Center located just east off I-10 within walking distance from both my high school alma mater Baylor University - Waco Campus (Waco High School) and NASA’s Lyndon Johnson Space Center - Kennedy Space Center Campus . The main thoroughfare through downtown today is named LBJ Freeway after then US President Lyndon Baines Johnson who attended Baylor University where he received his undergraduate degree in 1962 followed by graduate work at Rice University before being elected governor of Texas in 1966 . The Katy Air Force Base Annex building located northeast off FM 1960 east side served as Headquarters for Headquarters United States Army Forces Europe until its closure on September 30th 1992 due to budget cuts by Presidents George H W Bush and Bill Clinton Ashtar Command USAF moved their headquarters inside USAFE HQ Arlington National Cemetery along side CENTCOM ADC Commander First Lt Michael O'Keefe from Shaw AFB CA effective October 15th 1992 concurrent with transfer from Frankfurt Airport Germany which happened due to realignment within NATO Headquarters . This annex also housed two warehouses that were converted into living quarters for Squadron Leaders assigned support duties at RAF Fairford England while their munitions warehouse remained unoccupied .
