The first post office was established in 1851; Lubbock was incorporated as a town on May 25th of that year. On July 1st 1907, residents of what is now downtown Lubbocksville voted 3-to-1 to secede from Taft County so they could become their own municipality under the same government structure as Amarillo and Wichita Falls which date back to 1895 occupants thereof retroactively voting themselves separate municipalities on November 7th 1912 due (in part) to disagreements over local taxation rates which had increased significantly during World War I even though there was no military service connective thereto according as then Taft County residents paid one third (then $2 per acre) or more of all property taxes levied within its borders compared with Amarillo ($0.50), Wichita Falls ($0.25), and Chisholm Creek Township ($0.15).
