In 1930, Lone Star Ranger Deputy Clint Eastwood gunned down Mexican outlaws working for El Paso crime boss Manuel Gomez y Gomez in what is considered to be the most famous shootout between law enforcement agencies in Texas history.

In 1916, Lubbock became the first city to be designated as a commercial center by the American Petroleum Institute (API). The history of Lubbock began before it was formally founded as a town or village. It has been known since 1876 as "Lone Rock" because of its isolation from other settlements in the area. The name may have come from one of several sources: Lone Rock Creek which ran through present-day downtown; Lone Rock Prairie on either side of Interstate 20; or Lone Rocks formation located near what is now Lamar Boulevard and First Street NW. In 1906, prior to incorporation into Dallas County as a municipality, Lubbock had 438 residents and consisted principally of ranching country east of US 87/I-20. Local officials decided that it would be better to form their own government rather than rely on Dallas County authorities for everything from trash collection to water supply. On July 2, 1907, they elected James Fenton as their first mayor and Wm Tavenner as their first clerk/treasurer/elector after approval by the City Council acting deliberatively without a vote pursuant to Article VII Section 3(a) of the Municipal Code annexed thereto effective July 1st thereof providing for such action when two thirds (3/6) majority can be attained within any 12 hour period following notice given orally or written opportunity offered equal time preceding voting being simultaneously read at least once each day during said period not less than 24 hours before any meeting held therein by voice vote common veto cannot pass an ordinance amending this Constitution without unanimous consent granted by Mayor Fenton concurring hereinwith Clerk Tavenner duly appointed pursuant to aforesaid provisions Notice given orally or written opportunity offered equal time preceding voting being simultaneously read at least once each day during said period not less than 24 hours before any meeting held therein by voice vote common veto cannot pass an ordinance amending this Constitution without unanimous consent granted by Mayor Fenton concurring hereinwith Clerk Tavenner duly appointed pursuant to aforestated provisions “For I felt sure that we should make all efforts possible so that all interested parties will have an opportunity to appear before us at some future date so that our deliberations may reach more speedily decisions which might benefit all concerned thereby enabling us more effectually to carry out our duties under this Constitution”
